Contemporary Classic & Lively
Though the Thailand-based Anantara brand made its name with a series of East Asian luxury resorts, it’s recently expanded into some European capitals, with equally impressive results. Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel stands right on the Ringstrasse, and occupies a 19th-century structure designed by Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen.

Much care was taken to preserve the building’s historical elements, but what’s inside is, functionally, as modern a luxury hotel as any in town. The rooms and suites are generously sized and subtly high-tech beneath their contemporary-classic surfaces; the spa brings state-of-the-art Thai treatments to Central Europe.

Brasserie Sophie highlights Austrian cuisine, while Theo’s Lounge & Bar serves drinks in the palace’s vast inner courtyard. The culinary highlight, though, is the one-MICHELIN-Star EDVARD, named for the Baron von Hansen himself.
