Inland Bali is for escaping the crowds, and surrounded by sprawling gardens and a vast expanse of rice fields, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana certainly qualifies as an escape. Here, a mile or two outside of Ubud, you’re never far from civilization, but from within the confines of the estate the rest of the world might as well not exist at all.
The Club Suites get things started with ample space, spa-like bathrooms with indoor tubs and outdoor showers, all rendered in a luxe and richly textured contemporary style. The Pool Villas raise the stakes a bit, with private sundecks adjoining their ten-meter pools; some add saunas, cold-water plunge pools and outdoor tubs, while the two-bedroom Hadiprana Estate serves as something of a presidential suite, a self-contained luxury residence unto itself.
A massive central pool serves all hotel guests, as does The Spa at Tanah Gajah, and The Tempayan serves a broad range of cuisines from Bali and far beyond. All the luxe resort staples are present and accounted for — but given Tanah Gajah’s expansiveness, its elegance, and its generally genteel atmosphere, the atmosphere here is less like a typical island resort and more like the Balinese equivalent of a country-house hotel.
