The notion of a Costa Brava eco-hotel implies a certain beachiness, but Can Mascort Eco Hotel, like many of the finest hotels, avoids the obvious move. About a mile inland from the coast is the medieval town of Palafrugell, and it’s in a restored 17th-century building in the historic center that Can Mascort makes its home. In the course of the renovations, the hotel’s proprietors have made this old house a model of sustainability, using only local, natural materials, and making conscious choices to minimize energy use, such as relying, to the greatest extent possible, on natural ventilation and lighting.
None of which means sacrificing comfort; quite the opposite, as Can Mascort’s philosophy holds that human beings are perfectly adapted to the old ways of living. The 15 rooms and suites are quiet, both visually and acoustically, and avoid such extraneous gadgetry as televisions. Everything is natural and touchable, finished in rich organic textures. And it’s no surprise that the hotel’s breakfast service similarly relies upon health-conscious, ultra-locally sourced ingredients. Next door, in the hotel’s “eco-apothecary,” you’ll find a curated selection of organic snacks and personal care products.
