Proof that the boom in Portuguese boutique hospitality isn’t confined to the mainland. Sul Villas & Spa is set on a cliff high above the southern shore of São Miguel Island, in the Azores, overlooking waters that owner Rodrigo Herédia knows well — he was a pro surfer before embarking on a career as a hotelier. Sul Villas, though, is less a surf shack and more a high-design boutique-style resort, one where you’ll likely spend more time in infinity pools and soaking tubs than paddling out to catch the next set.
With just twelve suites it’s a decidedly small-scale operation, though there’s naturally nothing small about the comforts. Kitchenettes and private terraces are universal; some of the larger suites add jacuzzis or private plunge pools. And along with the clean-lined contemporary design, modern conveniences like air conditioning, wi-fi, and Bluetooth sound systems are available as a matter of course.
Beyond breakfast and some light poolside fare you’re on your own, but the restaurants of the village of Santa Cruz and the town of Lagoa — both within walking distance — are more than capable of filling the gap. For the most part, this is a low-key, low-maintenance escape, though the staff can arrange all manner of activities, from nature walks on up to diving, surfing, and swimming with dolphins.
