Of the many islands off the coast of Cartagena de Indias, Tierra Bomba is nearest to the mainland, just twenty minutes away by boat — convenient to reach, yet far enough to feel like a tropical escape. It’s a popular day-trip destination, but a handful of hotels, like the stylish and sustainable Blue Apple Beach on the southwest coast, make it easier to enjoy the island’s idyllic white sand beaches at a leisurely pace. This boutique hotel takes inspiration from beach clubs in the south of France, where the owner used to live: rosé flows freely and DJs spin afro-latino beats at the chic open-air restaurant and bar, which faces a turquoise-tiled pool framed by sunbeds.
The pool party quiets down after dark, when Blue Apple Beach feels more like a quiet retreat for the lucky few who get to stick around. There are just eleven rooms, all spacious and colorful with cheerful stripes and patterns in oceanic hues, artisan-crafted wood furnishings, stone-lined bathrooms with walk-in showers, and private terraces, many with hammocks and plunge pools. Larger cabaña-style bungalows have outdoor showers, king-sized daybeds, and sea views. Elsewhere on the grounds, a large palapa shades a yoga deck that doubles as an outdoor cinema at night. The hotel provides stand-up paddleboarding equipment down on the beach, and it has its own PADI scuba center, with a nearby coral reef a short swim away.
