Sly Berlin stakes out a corner of Friedrichshain that’s rapidly evolving, and is, if not exactly uncharted territory, certainly outside the established borders of the boutique-hotel world. But the way these things go, that won’t be the case forever; for now, this spot, closer to Volkspark Friedrichshain than to the Spree, is close to the heart of all that’s cool in the so-called New East.

The 150 rooms are as stylish as you’d expect, and perhaps warmer and more richly figured; parquet floors and classic design pieces share space with Marshall bluetooth speakers and Nespresso coffee makers. Rather than in-room minibars, the hotel features a Späti, or the Berlin version of an all-night convenience store. And some more luxurious amenities are on offer as well, including a thoughtful little fitness studio and a rooftop wellness area with a sauna. Meanwhile, though Friedrichshain’s nightlife will likely tempt you outside, the hotel makes a case for staying in, via the Asian-inspired restaurant and the swanky cocktail bar and lounge.
