Many of the Loire Valley’s elegant châteaux were constructed with limestone extracted from the region’s famous troglodyte caves. Some of those caves were historically used as private dwellings or wine cellars, and a particularly large one, located on the banks of the Loire River in Rochecorbon, was home to a monastery. It’s since been transformed into Hotel Les Hautes Roches, the first luxury hotel of its kind in France, with pretty landscaped gardens framing an outdoor pool on the riverfront and low-lit, atmospheric passageways leading through the renovated cave inside.
The monks’ former cells, built right into the rocky cliffs, were smartly converted into stylish guest rooms. Though they’re short on natural light, the design is modern, with eye-catching murals, creative lighting, and atmospheric stone-lined bathrooms with tubs. Some have minimalist Scandinavian-inspired décor, while others feature bold botanical patterns and scarlet-red carpeting, and many offer views of the river. A pair of more traditional rooms, unconnected to the cave, are located in the hotel’s adjoining building. The 18th-century manor house doubles as a dining venue, housing the hotel’s formal restaurant and a more casual bistro, both with scenic terrace seating across from the water.
