In an undisturbed corner of Al-Ula Old Town, Dar Tantora occupies a maze of centuries-old mud-brick houses which have been sensitively restored with reed-covered ceilings, antique-inspired lighting, and at the entrance, a hard-carved door that preserves the privacy of the village. The 30 tranquil guest rooms sit surrounded by the gentle rustle of date palms and combine a respect for the past with modern comforts; there’s a record player and a collection of vinyl to set your own mood, and although the hotel is powered by electricity, the gentle flicker of candlelight from the traditional lanterns feels more atmospheric. A quiet rooftop pool, meditation and yoga area and in-room massages offer a deeper moment of relaxation, and restaurant Joontos focuses on local ingredients for its Middle Eastern and Spanish flavors. It does not feel like stepping back in time, it feels like time never left.
