Tucked away in the woods in one of Japan’s most popular resort towns, Yufuin Tamanoyu used to be a retreat for Zen monks. It still has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere, its Japanese-style rooms spread out among elegant low-lying villas connected by quiet footpaths. Each features a traditional sitting room with tatami mats, a separate bedroom, and a wooden tub fed by hot spring water.
