Strictly speaking, it’s not one palace but two, a pair of neo-Baroque monuments that look across the Ringstrasse at the verdant Stadtpark. Behind its 19th-century façades, however, Almanac Palais Vienna is a collage of multiple eras and styles, from authentic antique architecture to contemporary furnishings and design, plus artworks from a number of eras, including an original Gustav Klimt. It all adds up to a remarkably self-assured luxury hotel, and a fine flagship for this Vienna-based brand.
The ratio of suites to rooms is an unusual 80 to 31, another hint at the hotel’s ambition; the rooms start out generously sized, while the largest suite expands to more than 2,000 square feet, and can be combined with three others, spanning an entire floor of the palace. At all levels they’re luxurious, but tastefully so, and nothing if not memorable. So is the spa, with its 14-meter indoor pool; meanwhile the restaurant, Donnersmarkt, serves a plant-forward menu. And to complement the hotel’s impressive art collection, every room key is also a pass to Belvedere 21, the contemporary art branch of Vienna’s Belvedere museum.
