Some hotels have a hard time making a definitive case for themselves, but not the Goring — this Belgravia luxury hotel can claim, with ample justification, to be the lodging of choice for guests who, for one reason or another, find the accommodations at Buckingham Palace to be less than ideal.
Of course for most of us the problem with staying at Buckingham Palace is that we haven’t been invited — in which case the Goring is a fine substitute indeed. Officially the last hotel built during Edward’s reign, and the first in the world to feature en suite bathrooms, it’s fresh off its hundredth birthday, and while it goes without saying that they’ve made some changes since then, the atmosphere of the place is as Edwardian as it ever was.
A fair proportion of the sixty-nine rooms and suites look out over the hotel’s quiet internal garden, though the rest, overlooking Victoria Square or Beeston Place, are hardly troubled by city traffic. Space forbids an exhaustive list of room amenities, and anyway, the point of a hotel like the Goring is that anything that’s somehow left out can be counted on to make an appearance within moments, on a silver platter.
Which brings us to the Dining Room. The Goring’s food and beverage program (as today’s industry insists on calling it) is utterly traditional — and this is not a criticism. The Goring doesn’t go in for concept restaurants or celebrity chefs, just a very fine dining room supplied by a highly skilled and impeccably sourced kitchen. The cocktail bar is a Belgravia institution, and the afternoon tea is a similarly hot ticket. There are newer hotels, obviously, as well as bigger ones, but none quite like this.
