Tulum’s hotels seem to be competing with one another to see who can offer guests a more direct connection with nature — and in this kind of contest it’s the travelers who ultimately win. Habitas Tulum is largely an open-air experience, going so far as to offer tented rooms with canvas walls, palapa roofs, and hardwood floors, as well as, in many cases, terraces that face directly out to sea. Outdoor showers reinforce that back-to-nature feeling, and some of the units come with private plunge pools right outside the bedrooms; meanwhile the Jungle rooms stand back from the beach, and are surrounded by luxh greenery and active wildlife.
The hotel’s wellness program includes yoga classes and spa treatments on an elevated open-air deck, and incorporates multiple traditions, from Maya ritual to modern spa science. Nature walks, cave diving, and arts and culture programming are among the daily diversions. And while Tulum’s dining and nightlife scene is likely to tempt you out, there’s at least one good reason to stay in for the evening: Moon, the wood-fired restaurant, serves sustainably sourced seasonal fare with a Middle Eastern accent, as well as a creative list of locally inspired cocktails.
