There aren’t many high-end hotels in the far-flung surfers’ enclave of Itacaré, Brazil. Offering a sophisticated alternative to the region’s traditional inns is Barracuda Hotel & Villas, set on a palm tree-framed clifftop, its wide infinity pool and wooden terraces open to the sea, sky, and jungle. The atmosphere and aesthetics bring together laid-back Bahian charm and Scandinavian minimalism, both in an authentic way — the original owners are, in fact, Brazilian and Swedish.
The main building houses 17 suites with clean architectural lines, polished concrete floors, wood-paneled ceilings, and furnishings built by local carpenters. Most have private verandas facing the water; all have floor-to-ceiling white drapery that flutters romantically in the breeze. The hotel’s freestanding villas, meanwhile, provide extra space, plus kitchens and private infinity pools.
Freshly caught seafood and potent cachaça-infused cocktails are served at a restaurant and bar that spills onto the pool deck — though it’s hard to beat the views from the smaller rooftop bar, especially with a caipirinha in hand at sunset. Meanwhile the hotel’s staff happily arranges surfing, hiking, and canoeing nearby, while Barracuda’s indoor-outdoor wellness space features a picturesque yoga deck.
