Modern Design & Quiet
There’s a disproportionate number of lodging options on tiny Kouri Island, connected to mainland Okinawa by a long bridge — understandable, given its gorgeous natural scenery and quiet beaches on the emerald-green sea. The architecturally striking Yawn Yard, set on a forested hill overlooking the water, is among the best. This boutique hotel occupies a series of angular blonde-wood villas, all featuring private outdoor spaces with dining areas where seasonally inspired meals are served. Many also have infinity plunge pools and ocean views. Rooms are minimalist and light-filled with pale wood paneling and locally designed furnishings. There are no screens or sound systems on the premises, just peace, quiet, and a blissful setup to properly enjoy it.
