It’s not every night you get to sleep in a real-life castle, or one with the fairytale setting of Grad Otočec. The former castle turned boutique hotel sits hidden away on islet in the middle of the Krka River, making it Slovenia’s only “water castle”, and one of its most unusual stays. The centuries old stone walls and turrets have been restored to their original Renaissance and Gothic glory and now house 16 guest room that feel contemporary but still classic with warm shades of wood and brown. The restaurant serves a seasonal menu of regional flavors and European classics, such as Piran sea bass carpaccio and steak with Dijon mustard and dishes are based around local produce from nearby farms, and even the hotel’s own organic garden. In addition to the main dining room there’s also the cozy Hunting Room for drinks by the fire and in summer months, an outdoor terrace. There’s no spa but there is an 18-hole golf course, and wine tastings take place in the memorable setting of one of the castle’s towers.
