Once the private vacation home of a prominent Greek family — “Nelya” is a composite of Nefeli and Lydia, their two daughters’ names — Nelya Suites is an island escape that’s both luxurious and down-to-earth. Offering some of the best panoramic views in the area, the hotel feels deliciously hidden away on Santorini’s caldera cliffs, yet it’s surprisingly easy to access, just a ten-minute drive from both the ferry terminal and the airport, and within easy walking distance of the village of Megalochori.
Nelya has just a handful of suites and a freestanding villa, all of which are modern and minimalist, done up in crisp white with notes of turquoise and aquamarine. From the built-in Aegean-style furniture to the stylish kitchenettes and airy tiled bathrooms, it’s all clean lines, Cycladic shapes, and calming hues. Though it’s fair to say the view from each suite’s private terrace, pitched high over the island’s dramatic coastline, is as startling as it is relaxing, at least on first impression. From this elevated position, peering down at the caldera, it’s hard to imagine a more spectacular lookout point exists on Santorini. Some suites have open-air Jacuzzis; another has a pool, as does the spacious villa. A breakfast featuring organic and homemade products, served on heirloom-quality antique china, is delivered to rooms each morning.
