The small Scottish town of Rothes is at the heart of whisky country, and despite its unassuming name, the Station Hotel is by a considerable distance the finest lodging in town. Its proprietors’ first career was in the whisky business — no fewer than 500 varieties line the bar’s shelves — but they’re naturals at hospitality as well, as evidenced by the sheer quality of this handsome 15-room hotel.
Rooms and suites are an understated blend of contemporary and classic, and are quietly, confidently luxurious, down to the Hypnos beds and spa-like bathrooms; they span the range from a plush single room to five lavish suites named for famous distillers. And in spite of the hotel’s small size, it features not just the Spirit Safe whisky bar, but two restaurants as well: the fine-dining Pagodas and the more casual Toot’s Café Bar and Bistro.
