Élégance traditionnelle et Calme
Oaxaca City’s Hotel Sin Nombre may be the “hotel with no name,” but it’s certainly got an identity — an elusive, somewhat mysterious one, but an identity all the same. It’s the creation of a local artist, the California-born Elliott Coon, and the Portuguese architect João Boto Caeiro, who transformed this 17th-century house into a contemporary boutique hotel with a singular point of view.
The interiors may be sparse to the point of minimalism, but this isn’t a simple case of grafting contemporary design onto a historical structure; the decoration and restoration of this building went hand in hand, and the economy of ornament serves to accentuate the shapes and the materials of the original house. As a courtyard building, it lends itself to some North African influence as well, and the rooms and corridors are livened by large-scale monochrome photos by the Mexican artist Alberto Ibañez.
A location just off Oaxaca City’s main square places the best of the city right at your feet, but there’s plenty to do within the hotel’s walls; the courtyard patio serves breakfast and drinks, while a little library invites contemplation and a rooftop pool provides a view of the city. Of particular note: Restaurante Sin Nombre, for vegan variations on classic Oaxacan cuisine, as well as artisanal mezcal by Gem&Bolt, the proprietors’ own brand.
