Scenic landscapes have long drawn travelers to the Polish resort of Szklarska Poręba, and the region’s best hotels are strategically positioned to make the most of them. Case in point: Jaskółka Dom i Spa, perched on a high mountain slope, its verandas facing an expanse of pine forests and snowcapped peaks. The landmark inn opened in 1894 and served a variety of purposes over the years — the building functioned as a convent and, later, in the 1960s, was put to use by the government — before undergoing extensive renovations and reopening as a luxury boutique accommodation.
The interiors are just as impressive as the views, especially on the ground level, where the elegant living and drawing rooms feature high coffered ceilings, an ornate Viennese chandelier, and original woodwork, and the inn’s old porches, furnished with rocking chairs, are framed by decorative stained glass panels. Rooms are more modern, though each has period elements like hand-carved wainscoting or an antique writing desk. Apartment-style rooms are light-filled and earthy, with pale linen and exposed beams, while suites are sultrier, outfitted in moody shades of midnight blue and charcoal gray. All have stylish stone bathrooms with freestanding soaking tubs, and a few have private patios with mountain views. Breakfast is served on a sunny terrace when weather permits, and an outdoor fire pit and cozy pub-style bar are especially inviting after cross-country skiing or hiking to nearby waterfalls.
