We love the plucky little independent hotels, of course, but there’s something to be said for a brand name that puts a complete picture in your head. In the case of Kimpton, that’s a smart, stylish, and accessible vision of boutique hospitality, a place that’s inclusive rather than exclusive — and, crucially, that’s not confined to a couple of big cities on the coasts. Take Dallas, for example. Here architects Perkins + Will have transformed a century-old landmark in Deep Ellum into the Pittman Hotel, named for its original designer, the pioneering African-American architect William S. Pittman.
It’s just what you expect from Kimpton, and we mean that in the best possible way: lively public spaces, inspiring and historically informed design, and just the right measure of luxury without crossing over into excess. The rooms are elegant, and somewhat eclectic, spanning a century of modernism and decorated with original contemporary artworks. The neighborhood is a lively one, full of music venues, restaurants, and art galleries, and the Pittman’s own atmosphere is similarly vibrant, thanks to Elm & Good, a tavern-style restaurant and bar with an open kitchen and a delightful outdoor patio. It’d be a standout anywhere, and elevates the Dallas hotel scene single-handedly.
