A true escape in the Caribbean is harder to find every year, but a place whose address is simply “Behind the Mountain” is a promising one. Golden Rock Resort, on the Dutch island of Sint Eustatius, is made up of a mere 32 rooms and suites, surrounded by a lush 40-acre oceanfront estate that is home to more than 140,000 plants and trees and the largest ocean-fed saltwater lagoon in the Caribbean. The interiors are contemporary yet warm, avoiding both tropical kitsch and aggressive minimalism, and the plentiful comforts make life easy indeed: two pools, a spa, tennis, padel and pickleball courts, a beach club with its own open-air restaurant, and the signature restaurant, Breeze, which highlights local produce grown in the hotel’s own greenhouse.
