Long before electric light, builders used narrow courtyards or lightwells to bring daylight into interior spaces; that’s the case with this 300-year-old Huizhou-style mansion in the hills of the Chinese countryside, rescued and rehabilitated and transformed into a contemporary luxury boutique hotel known as Wuyuan Skywells. It’s an impressive restoration, contrasting weathered old masonry with as-new traditional woodwork and a generous infusion of modern furniture and contemporary interior design. Though less lavish than some of China’s new luxury boutique hotels, it’s more than comfortable enough, and its surplus of character is the stuff lifelong memories are made of.
