You might guess that a place called Windsor, Nova Scotia, along the banks of the Avon River, might be touched by just a tiny bit of influence from Great Britain. The August House, however, is notable for its Italian influence. Not only is this historic mansion, a survivor of the 1897 fire, constructed in the Italianate style, but its current owners undertook its restoration and its transformation into a boutique inn after a visit to Italy and a close-up look at the slow-living virtues embodied in the best Italian hospitality.
Absent, though, is any overt Italian style. The August House is as devoted to its particular locale as the finest Chianti farmhouse is to Tuscany — right down to the floorboards, proudly milled from Nova Scotian lumber. The rooms and suites are simply decorated, but far from minimalist, decorated with a keen eye for color and just the right amount of ornament, comfortable without feeling overly lavish. A house-made breakfast is served each morning, and while the house goes without a dedicated restaurant, your hosts are handy with detailed local recommendations.
