A pope, a king, Mark Twain, and Elizabeth Taylor are just a few of the distinguished guests who’ve passed through the halls of Hotel D’Inghilterra. This elegant 19th-century palazzo, set on a quiet pedestrian-only street around the corner from the Spanish Steps, is home to one of Rome’s legendary old hotels. The landmark reopened in 2024 after year-long renovations, its old-world grandeur only enhanced by its design-forward makeover.
The opulent interiors are freshly outfitted with bespoke wallpaper, Murano glass chandeliers, supple velvet loveseats, and decorative mosaics by Roman artisans. Rooms and suites are glamorous, lined in oak and marble, with antique furnishings draped in rich Italian fabrics; some have private balconies, mirrored bar cabinets, and ceramic lamps handcrafted in a Florentine atelier. And among the additions is a spa suite, clad in travertine and tucked away beneath vaulted ceilings.
Meanwhile the ground-level Café Romano, with its cozy wood-paneled bar and chocolate-brown tufted leather banquette seating, is a perfectly stylish spot for dinner or an aperitivo. The highlight, however, might be Terrazza Romana, the hotel’s rooftop cocktail bar, with its unique view over the Eternal City.
