MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

It's no surprise that this charming osteria is still prospering as Chef/owner Frank DeCarlo took great effort to build his brick oven from scratch. And except for the pasta, everything is cooked in this fiery hearth that is the very centerpiece of Peasant. If that's not enough, the décor is appealingly rustic thanks to whitewashed walls, bare wood tables and a bustling wine bar downstairs. Kick things off with ricotta and bread, but then venture on to such unique and unapologetically hearty dishes such as the sarde al forno or lasagna di coniglio. The rich, complex smoke of the wood-burning oven infuses most of the dishes here, like spaghetti con ricci surrounded by a rainbow of tomatoes; porchetta studded with garlic and rosemary; or stewed trippa alla Romana.
