MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Like its UES elder, this little den is helmed by Chef Junichi Matsuzaki of the Ash Room. In Japanese tradition, savory small plates called otsumami may be offered along with alcoholic beverages. These bites tend to be anything but small, however, and following suit, the chef's precise, seasonally driven omakase offers an array of robust otsumami, nigiri and sashimi. Rather than appetizers followed by nigiri, these creations are woven together in deliciously inventive ways, arriving first as say, sashimi, and then repurposed a few courses later as nigiri.
All of this transpires in a wee space donning a blonde matte wood counter made from Japanese cyprus and framed by seven seats. The spartan design is far from novel, but it is elegant and very inviting.
