A luxury resort in one of Mexico’s coastal enclaves would be nothing new, but a hacienda-style hotel in the heart of a historic city center is far from commonplace. The Rosewood San Miguel de Allende is a departure for the Hong Kong–based luxury brand, a detailed reproduction of a grand colonial-style residence, surrounding a lovely central courtyard in the city’s UNESCO-listed old town. And while a lesser hotelier might have been tempted to import their own characteristic aesthetic, here Rosewood wisely opts for a purely local style, leaving its own contributions to the (still essential) areas of comfort, service, and programming.
This means rooms and suites that look like they’re straight out of the 19th century, even as they’re furnished with modern bathrooms, deep soaking tubs, and state-of-the-art entertainment systems — as well as low-tech luxuries like fireplaces and Rivolta Carmignani linens. Views vary according to the rooms’ and suites’ height and orientation, but the best ones have terraces with far-ranging vistas of the city’s rooftops.
The flagship 1826 Restaurant and the associated tequila bar are the culinary main events, though there’s also the Agua poolside restaurant and bar, as well as Luna, the rooftop tapas bar, with the best views in the house, if not in all of San Miguel de Allende. Also on the top floor is Sense, the Rosewood spa — and the associated recreation offerings include a gym, a pair of tennis courts, and no fewer than three swimming pools.
