Lysebu Hotel may look like something out of a Norwegian folk tale, but its history is very real. Originally built during the First World War by a shipping magnate, the property was donated to the Danish-Norwegian Cooperation Fund in appreciation of the food aid Norway received during the German occupation. Today, outdoor lovers flock to the hotel for a scenic retreat that’s just 20 minutes away from Oslo’s city center. From here, on the edge of the Nordmarka forest, guests can hike, ski, and cycle among the pine trees. While rooms are fairly minimalist, they do exhibit a special decorative touch — thanks to an arrangement with the Henie Onstad Art Centre, many rooms feature paintings and prints from well-known Norwegian and Danish artists like Gunnvor Advoccat, Carl Nesjar, and Knut Rumohr.
