If you’re a frequent boutique-hotel traveler you probably know the Arlo Hotels name, thanks to a pair of fun, accessibly stylish hotels in New York City. For their first expansion outside of Manhattan they’ve gone all the way to South Beach, taking over what opened in 1951 as the Nautilus Hotel. It’s the work of Morris Lapidus, the architect who more than any other is responsible for Miami Beach’s mid-century modern architectural identity. And though Nautilus has been recently renovated with an eye towards the contemporary traveler — for an example, see the lobby’s multi-use co-working space — its visual character is still true to its unique place in design history.
If you’re a fan of its sisters in SoHo and NoMad, you can expect more of the same in SoBe, with a benefit of the move from New York to Miami Beach being a bit more space to spread out and a bit more in the way of physical luxury. Think of it as Arlo’s “resort collection.” There’s plenty of continuity — just as in New York this hotel features a 24-hour Bodega for coffee and light fare made by local purveyors. And there are some only-in-Miami features as well, from the modernist-inspired architecture and design to the heated saltwater pool with its underwater sound system. Meanwhile, on an expansive outdoor terrace the Nautilus Cabana Club serves a Miami Beach interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine, while the Lobby Bar holds down cocktail duty, and more venues are sure to come.
