Rockers dream of country houses too — at least the successful ones do. So why shouldn’t there be a country-house sequel to the rock’n’roll Sanctum Soho, on the site of a 17th-century Berkshire coaching inn? And if the original Sanctum’s glamorous, debauched style was unique in London, the slinky, sexy vibe inside the Sanctum on the Green is like no country house you’ve ever seen.

Gone are the tartans and tweeds, replaced by earthy neutrals and a generous helping of velvet — the Sanctum’s accent color is “none more black.” Imagine, if it’s not a contradiction in terms, a tasteful amount of decadence. Boudoir chic, not bordello kitsch. With just nine rooms it’s a small package, with a remarkable range, from the “crash pads” (clearly inspired by their compact urban cousins), through the deluxe doubles and on up to the expansive Sanctum Suite. The smallest of these are probably intended for impromptu after-dinner stays, but an affordable room in a country house is nothing to turn one’s nose up at — and if you’ve got an entourage, rent the Pool House, which is the Sanctum Suite plus an attached deluxe and Crash Pad.

You’ll notice we said a couple of the magic words. One of them is “pool,” of course, a black-slate affair ringed by loungers. The other was “dinner”; upscale modern-British might be the most effective summation. A treatment room turns the Sanctum into a proper luxe getaway, albeit one that’s more leather than lace.
