Often the most understated names are reserved for the most impressive hotels. The Retreat Costa Rica is set in the inland mountains to the west of San Jose, Costa Rica, and is thus dedicated not to sand and surf but to relaxed contemplation with views of the rainforest. But peace and quiet are only part of the package; there’s a spa and an Ayurvedic center, as well as yoga instruction, a diverse fitness program, and more unconventional interventions, from IV therapy to detox protocols and “emotional healing.”
And simply as a lodging it’s got plenty to recommend it. The Retreat’s accommodations range from spacious double rooms to a selection of luxury lofts and even a three-bedroom villa, the Residence at Santosha. Meanwhile the views range from idyllic to spectacular, thanks to the hotel’s position atop a forested mountainside. The restaurant serves locally sourced farm-to-table cuisine with a particular emphasis on health, though the bar is happy to pour wine, beer, and cocktails. And while a shut-in holiday is a perfectly viable option, excursions to a variety of natural and cultural destinations are offered as well.
