MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

In SF's dizzyingly expensive dining landscape, this hot spot, which offers a three-course menu for under $40, is an incredible steal—provided you’re willing to sacrifice freedom of choice. The two options for each course change daily based on what’s freshest: your repast may feature fork-tender short ribs draped atop a luscious parmesan polenta and spigarello, followed by frozen chocolate parfait garnished with crushed cashews and huckleberries.

As with any killer deal, there are caveats: reservations are necessary (and hard to score) and the noise level is through the roof. However, this historic brick space is lots of fun, with cool, contemporary art and a namesake central trestle table. The fact that the price is right only adds to the overall allure.
