MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

This historic bar has been expertly revived under NYC chef, April Bloomfield, who spent millions to add a kitchen and make its old-school charm seem untouched. White-coated bartenders shake and stir behind the glorious carved wood bar, while diners feast in the cushy red leather booths. Tables are few, so expect a wait if you don’t have a reservation. The food is Italian-American with Bloomfield's signature meaty influences, like flavorful, gamey grilled lamb ribs that nearly fall off the bone. Pastas are strong, from creamy gemelli cacio e pepe to rich, spicy bucatini all'Amatriciana. But don't neglect their vegetables: a dish of tender cauliflower and potatoes in a rich Taleggio sauce with crunchy breadcrumbs is a showstopper.
