Though it’s moved across town from the Mission to the Fillmore, the former Woodward’s Garden has maintained its tasteful, unpretentious vibe with a bolder, more current aspect. It now even has an actual garden, with a few outdoor tables for dining in the warmer months. Thoughtful service makes Gardenias an equally beloved destination among groups of millennials and leisurely couples on a dressy date night. Owners Dana Tommasino and Margie Conard are local restaurant veterans. Their Californian cooking may not be cutting-edge, but it has a timeless appeal. Whether you're savoring fork-tender red wine-braised short ribs with celery root purée or a rustic plum and raspberry tart, it's the kind of seasonal, soul-warming food that never goes out of style.
