Named for Napoleon’s second wife, the Duchess of Parma, Sina Maria Luigia is the mid-century version of a classic grand hotel — hidden behind its looming mid-century façade, however, is an elegant contemporary hotel, mixing modern comforts with historically inspired decoration. The rooms and suites vary widely, culminating in the two-level Suite Maria Luigia; most unusual are the Penthouse rooms, up under the eaves. Food, as you may expect from Parma, takes center stage; Maxim’s, something of a local favorite, does its level best to present the flavors of Emilia-Romagna in their best possible light.
