Today, it’s part of the Ritz-Carlton collection, but Penha Longa Resort, set in the green hills of the Sintra Cascais Nature Reserve, has deep roots in the region’s cultural history. The elegant estate was once an escape for the Portuguese royal family, and its historic palazzo-style buildings still have a regal air; the property’s 14th-century monastery, with its colorful tilework, is a treat to explore. The rooms and suites are comparatively contemporary, with modern décor, lavishly appointed bathrooms with Diptyque products, and balconies overlooking the golf course and the mountains beyond.
