First things first: the Vineyard Hotel, just outside the Berkshire market town of Newbury, does not stand on the site of an actual vineyard. But a hotel more devoted to wine would be difficult to imagine. Here the focus, perhaps surprisingly, is on Californian wines, though the collection ranges worldwide. The hotel is no afterthought; its rooms and suites feel glamorous in a worldly sort of way, as does the Vineyard restaurant, though its sourcing is impeccably local and seasonal. Wine tastings, meanwhile, are practically unavoidable; in particularly plentiful supply are the products of owner Peter Michael’s three Napa and Sonoma County estates.
