“There was no phone call, which is common for Michelin,” Thomas Sühring, the elder brother, admits. “But of course, after seven, eight years, you still hope that our work can be rewarded somehow.” Then came the moment onstage. “You turn around, and there [Three Stars] they were,” he recalls. “It was a roller coaster of emotions. We just felt so special — very special.”
The win marks the culmination of a long, deeply personal journey. Though Sühring opened its doors in 2016, Thomas and Mathias Sühring had been in Thailand since 2008, carrying a shared dream of opening a restaurant that felt like home. They poured their savings into a modest house, renovated it themselves, and began inviting guests in — quite literally — “representing us and our heritage,” Mathias says. “Nothing was perfect, but it was very exciting."
Ten years on, that sense of purpose remains unchanged. “We still dream and give emotions to our guests every day,” they say. The morning after the announcement, the message to the team was simple: pride, humility, and consistency. “It’s a new beginning,” Thomas told the staff. “We have Three Stars, but we do everything the same — welcome our guests and give the best possible experience.”
The achievement belongs as much to the team as to the twins. Many have been there since the beginning — rare loyalty in the restaurant business — and a source of great pride. “At the end of the day, the only thing that comes first is the guests,” Mathias says. “We want people to be happy and create memorable experiences.”
Grateful to Thailand for giving them the space to dream big, the twins are clear about what matters most. Cooking far from home, sharing what they missed, and passing that emotion to guests — that remains the heart of Sühring. As the celebrations continue, the promise is simple and steadfast: keep the work honest, keep the guests first, and keep the joy alive — every day.
