While the trend-hunters in search of the next Prague are currently prowling around Warsaw, Krakow and beyond, another sort of traveler is quietly stealing into Ljubljana, Slovenia, a town whose historical veins also lie alluringly close to the surface. You wouldn’t mistake the 16th-century Antiq Palace for an achingly hip “design boutique,” exactly, though that’s more a matter of intent than of style.
The old palace has, after all, been modernized, and in its renovated form it’s got a few contemporary flourishes. Mostly, though, it’s a sort of stylized version of its historical self, with brand-new iterations of period-correct floorings and furnishings, for example, accompanying its centuries-old ceilings and columns. And while the beds and baths are quite up to date, there’s plenty of space for these historical elements — the Palace is an all-suite property, comprising just fourteen relatively capacious lodgings.
What’s to do in Ljubljana? The Antiq Palace is a more than competent business hotel, if that’s the purpose of your visit. Otherwise you’re more than likely to use it simply to get away — fans of small cities with picturesque old town districts find themselves in good company.
How to get there: Antiq Palace Hotel & Spa is 16 miles (26 km) from Ljubljana Airport and about 1 mile (1.8 kim) from Ljubljana Central Train Station.
Note: The hotel is located in a pedestrian only zone. If driving please use the following GPS coordinates and call hotel upon arrival to gain access with your car: TRG Francocke Revolucije 5, 1000 Ljubljana.
