It’s an understatement to call Boutique-Hotel Blaue Burg’s location spectacular. Perched more than 4,000 feet above the fairy-tale landscapes of Bavaria, it’s set amid the peaks of the Allgäu Alps, right next to the oldest castle ruins in Germany. A fine dining venue has brought more traffic to the steep mountain pass in recent years, and since staying the night makes more sense than driving back down the mountainside in the dark, the property has expanded to include a stylish family-run boutique hotel.

It’s quiet luxury all the way inside Blaue Burg’s elegant suites. Most are mountain chalet–chic, with oak flooring, knotty pine walls or exposed wood beams, and light-filled bathrooms with soaking tubs, although one is done up in Moroccan style, with arching doorways and a clay shower. Many have private balconies or terraces, and all offer dazzling views over the valley below. Plush robes and slippers, Nespresso machines, and an extensive pillow menu add extra coziness, and the hotel’s spa, with multiple fireplace nooks, a Finnish sauna, and a wooden deck facing the Alps, is just as inviting.
