The Provençal hilltop village of Gordes provides the spectacular setting for one of the region’s most extraordinary hotels — no small distinction, given the competition. Airelles Gordes, La Bastide takes pride of place within this medieval village, with its expansive view of the Luberon valley. The main house dates back to the 16th century, while the hotel’s interiors take their inspiration from the elegance of the 18th; the result is thus a touch more polished than what the exterior might lead you to expect.

La Bastide’s 34 rooms and six suites differ in size and character, though they’re all variations on a similar theme. Some are more rustic, others more delicate, but all are a heady mix of historical atmosphere and subtle contemporary luxury. Views are of the village, the valley, and/or the Luberon massif.

In addition, you’ll find a borderline decadent array of facilities and services. The Airelles Spa by Guerlain is inspired by Sénanque Abbey, a local landmark, and features a hammam, a sauna, four treatment rooms, and an indoor pool; outdoors is the sunny Terrace Pool and a separate kids’ pool, part of the hotel’s expansive children’s program. Meanwhile La Table de La Bastide, the flagship restaurant, is complemented by the vegetable-forward Clover Gordes; nearby, in the village, are the Asian-inspired Le TiGrr, the trattoria-style La Bastide de Pierres, and even a tea room by Ladurée.
