Located in bustling Bukit Bintang, almost exactly in the center of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, Bintang Collectionz Hotel is something of a rarity. In a Times Square–like neighborhood known for its skyscrapers and entertainment complexes, including one of the world’s largest shopping malls and Malaysia’s biggest indoor theme park, this relatively small-scale hotel embraces its connection to the past. After decades of operating as a simple family-run hotel in a quickly developing area, the property was snapped up and restored by youthful new owners in 2022. The lower levels of the building’s pre-colonial façade were deep-cleaned and placed behind protective glass, their decorative panels and antique wooden shutters illuminated by the glow of LED lights.

The updated interiors still feature architectural details and artifacts from days gone by. But the once-dated corridors were transformed into curving hallways painted a sultry deep red, the old carpets were pulled back and replaced with sleek wood flooring, and the lobby level features a striking exposed brick ceiling, black leather sofas, and contemporary art installations. Rooms and suites are simple and modern with built-in wood furnishings, sophisticated lighting systems, and bathrooms lined in charcoal-gray terrazzo tile. A handful of hipster-friendly fast food-style eateries on the ground level — one serving Malaysian food, the other Japanese — are convenient, and everything else one could wish to eat, drink, or buy is available within a few blocks’ walk.
