Contemporary Classic & Quiet
It’s back to basics at The Well, northern Europe’s largest spa: phones aren’t permitted, and swimwear isn’t allowed in saunas and steam baths, where a “natural nudity” policy prevails. Luckily, it’s easy to go with the flow here, joining relaxation-seeking Norwegians as they stream from pools to waterfalls to meditation rooms, a Japanese-style bathhouse, and a Turkish hammam — and you can wear whatever you want in the privacy of your room.
Though the location is just outside Oslo, the wooded setting feels pleasingly remote. Rooms and suites are appealing in their silence, simplicity, and Scandinavian style. Each has parquet floors, locally produced Wonderland beds and Høie linens, modern bathrooms with walk-in showers, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the forest. There are no screens around — digital detox is a key component of the spa’s philosophy — but Marshall speakers and Nespresso machines are welcome amenities.
Even when staying in the most luxurious suite, with its oversized tub and its double shower, guests are unlikely to spend much time in their rooms, given that the Well Spa is open practically around the clock. Other notable features include a poolside bar, a pair of restaurants — including one that’s bathrobe-friendly — as well as Norway’s largest private art collection (with pieces by Herb Ritts and Robert Mapplethorpe), a sculpture forest, and a network of hiking and cross-country skiing trails.
