One Star: High quality cooking
Run by Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot, the renowned duo behind Restaurant 212, this is a bistro of the old school. As you enter this charming, vintage-style space in the bustling Utrechtsestraat, you receive a warm welcome from the chefs, and delicious aromas waft towards you. You quickly get the feeling there are no obligations and yet anything is possible. The entire à la carte menu is a real treat for any foodie. The chef is not afraid to use less fashionable ingredients such as oxtail and pike-perch. The intensity of his no-nonsense dishes makes a convincing case for why these overlooked foodstuffs are deserving of more attention. Ratte potato purée is seasoned with herbs and smoked butter, and served with an intense beurre blanc, dried tuna foam and a generous quenelle of caviar. He is equally adept at pairing crisp veal sweetbreads with candied orange, tandoori carrots and an intense bisque sauce. At De Juwelier, they keep things straightforward yet still surprise you with traditional robust flavours, modern freshness and French finesse. Here you can enjoy a proper feast, just like in the old days – at unbeatable value for money!
