Maestro’s location amidst Old Town Pasadena’s national chains is a bit of a red herring as this upscale Mexican restaurant is anything but ordinary. Instead, discover a sexy, modern space with soft lighting and lofty ceilings (perfect for date night) along with an ambitious kitchen delivering ingredient-driven dishes.
The chef plates with an artist’s eye, elevating even the most humble of items to a creative form—that empanada filled with tender shrimp and octopus over house-made chorizo and locro-style beans with a serrano lime sauce, for one. Braised lamb shank with just a bit of heat is yet another standout, but save the best for last with a moist corn cake topped with sweet and salty caramel popcorn, huitlacoche ice cream and crème anglaise.
