Central Park Voorburg

The stately white building that houses Central Park Voorburg, one of the finest historic hotels in the Randstad, is called Vreugd & Rust — Dutch for “Peace & Rest.” The surrounding green space shares the same name, and it’s easy to see why. This country estate, just a stone’s throw from the Hague, is a national monument that doubles as a boutique hotel, with an elegant bar and restaurant suited to special occasions.

The farm and homestead date back to the 18th century, and many original details remain, from the whitewashed exterior and tiled roof to the rococo staircase and stucco ceilings. Rustic wooden beams add character to the hotel’s beautifully restored, light-filled rooms and suites, which feature geometric wallpaper, patterned carpets, Hästens beds, modular furniture, and bathrooms lined in white stone. For a protected landmark, the aesthetic is surprisingly fresh, juxtaposing the unexpected: plush velvet, varnished wood, metallic finishes. The avant-garde air is mostly confined to the upper levels, however: the ground-level restaurant, where breakfast is served, is sophisticated but traditional, with ornate chandeliers, wood-plank flooring, and scenic views over the surrounding gardens.
