You should know, first of all, that Long Island City is closer than it sounds. Brooklyn is on Long Island, for instance, and most of it is farther from Manhattan than LIC. This is the innermost section of Queens, separated from the hippest parts of Brooklyn by a mere quirk of geography, and as post-industrial urban redevelopments go, it’s pretty much the poster child. So something like The Collective Paper Factory was always in the cards; and now that it’s arrived, it’s perhaps the purest example of New York industrial chic currently on offer in the boutique hotel world.

In evidence are any number of historic touches, from original architectural features to reclaimed and salvaged flooring and furniture, and everything that’s not actually vintage is at least vintage in style. The hotel is swaddled in textures of brick, stone, wood and leather, a far cry from the glossy sheen of today’s Manhattan boutique hotels. And the spaces spread out a bit, a reminder that there’s something to be gained from a location on this side of the East River.

Mundo, the restaurant, was already an Astoria fixture before moving into its new digs at the Paper Factory. And it’s far from the only game in town — Long Island City is becoming a mini–entertainment district in its own right. You’re within striking distance of midtown Manhattan, not to mention Williamsburg, and more immediately you’re within walking distance of Kaufman Arts District, the little corner of Astoria where the American movie industry maintains its East Coast bureau.

How to get there: The Collective Paper Factory is easily accessible (by car) from either John F. Kennedy International Airport or LaGuardia Airport. The hotel is a two-minute walk to the 36th St MTA Stop on the R or M train, and a six-minute walk to the 39 Av MTA Stop on the N or Q train.
