Hotel Nyack, a JdV by Hyatt Hotel
400 High Avenue, Catskills & Hudson Valley, USA
133 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Lively
The precise definition of “upstate” is up for debate, but for most New Yorkers, Nyack is upstate enough — cross the Tappan Zee bridge and you’re in a charming little village by the Hudson River, where plenty of B&Bs are all too willing to cater to your country-getaway fantasy. The newly reopened Hotel Nyack, however, represents the inverse. Instead of offering rustic-chic accommodations in a restored farmhouse, Hotel Nyack is modern and urban with loft-style guest rooms, a stylish steakhouse, and a Tesla charging station. Instead of apple-picking, you’ll be sipping craft beer on the rooftop’s lounge. Instead of feeling far away from home, you’ll feel comfortably close to it.
Hotel Nyack is located within the architectural framework of an old factory, so the aesthetic is industrial chic. But this isn’t a hotel that takes itself too seriously: there’s a warm and whimsical air to the interiors lined with patterned wallpaper, decorative mirrors, Oriental rugs, even the occasional snippet of zebra-print upholstery. Guest rooms are colorful and cozy, with high ceilings and parquet floors. Each is outfitted with pillowtop beds and Frette linens, 47-inch flatscreen TVs, Keurig coffee machines, custom-made bath products, and complimentary wi-fi. Even the most standard room includes a cool lounge chair and ottoman; many suites and deluxe rooms come with Chesterfield sofas and private balconies with river views.
The public spaces are the draw here, though, from the lobby lounge to the outdoor fire pit and terrace to the rooftop bar. There’s an outdoor pool in summertime, and a 24-hour fitness room. But you’re upstate, baby — this is the ideal moment to skip your regular drill. Get your cardio by hopping on one of the hotel’s rental bicycles instead, and pedaling along the Hudson, or over to Edward Hopper's Birthplace and Boyhood Home. You’re close enough to the city that you don’t really need to stay the night, but Nyack is a good place to pretend like you’re far away — to have your cake and eat it too.
