Located at the foot of the Hardenberg castle ruins, a thousand-year-old clifftop monument that rises up majestically in the Palatinate Forest, Relais & Châteaux Hardenberg BurgHotel has a privileged location on the grounds of an ancient estate. The noble family abandoned the castle in the 18th century, around the same time the hotel was built — but the old distillery, tavern, and castle park are still in operation, and Hardenberg BurgHotel is the perfect base from which to enjoy them. With its red-shingled roof and half-timbered gables, the beautifully restored building exudes fairytale charm, and inside, it’s refined but cozy, with native wood flooring, exposed stone walls, and antique furnishings.
Most rooms and suites are housed in the main house, with several others in the renovated mill next door. They’re all spacious and elegant with coffered walls, original artwork, bathrooms with tubs, and private balconies or terraces. Some face the castle, others the courtyard or the riding grounds, and all have large sitting areas ideal for sipping a Nespresso or complimentary spirits from the estate’s distillery. Downstairs, the modern BurgSpa has a fireplace and whirlpools with castle views.The generous breakfast buffet features regional and organic products, including homemade jams and eggs provided by a nearby farmer. Novalis, the hotel’s restaurant, follows suit with seasonal dishes crafted from locally caught fish and game. When the weather cooperates, relaxing or dining outside on one the hotel’s pretty wood-lined terraces is especially appealing, and guests are invited on a free guided tour of the castle ruins on Sundays.
