MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

This striking Elizabethan manor was built as a hunting lodge for Henry VIII and boasts 50 acres of stunning gardens and a charming interior full of original details. Bedrooms are flamboyant and the characterful dining room comes with exposed timbers, mullioned windows and walls hung with tapestries.
The restaurant bears the name of head chef Tony Parkin, who has been given free rein to make it his own. It’s an intimate space, with just seven tables, and he never serves more than 20 guests a night. Classically based menus comprise 5 courses at lunchtime and 8 in the evening, and the kitchen garden provides many of the ingredients, so natural flavours are to the fore. Cooking is accomplished yet understated and dishes are well-balanced, with real purity and a lightness of touch. Desserts, in particular, are a highlight. For private dining, book the Wine Room.
